Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati Tuesday accused the BJP of “creating” the issue of alleged migration of Hindu families from Kairana to divert attention from its candidates’ defeat in the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections in Uttar Pradesh.
“They were planning to sound the bugle for (2017) Assembly elections from Allahabad after showing the victory of their candidates in Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections with the use of money power and horse-trading. When they failed to get their second candidates elected, the issue of people migrating from Kairana was invented, showing as if only Muslims were responsible for causing the exodus of Hindus. It was a conspiracy to cause Hindu-Muslim riots,” Mayawati told reporters at her residence.
BJP had nominated two candidates for the MLC polls of which only one won. Apart from its official candidate for RS polls, it had announced support to Independent candidate Preeti Mahapatra forcing a contest. Mahapatra, however, lost. Last week, BJP MP from Shamli, Hukum Singh, had claimed that hundreds of families, mostly Hindus, have left Kairana because of increasing crime in the area. He had also released a list of 346 families who had been forced to flee the town in the district, which has 85 per cent Muslim population.
